The county's two incorporated towns of Bowling Green and Port Royal have populations of 766 and 204 respectively. Caroline is located within 30 miles of the Richmond metro area. The County occupies 549 square miles, 77,000 acres of which belong to the Ft. A.P. Hill military reservation. 261,700 acres of this area are commercial forest land, 51,605 acres farm land. Caroline County has three financial institutions with total assets of approximately 578 million: Union Bank & Trust, EVB, and Second Bank and Trust. The Caroline County Industrial Development Authority is authorized to issue tax-exempt revenue bonds. Caroline County is served by an SBA 504 Certified Development Company to asist small business in fixed asset financing. Local service organizations sponsor seasonal recreational activities for the public, including softball leagues, karate, ballet, and special events for both children and adults. There are 10 ball fields, four tennis courts, numerous private swimming pools and three public golf courses that also have private membership. Fort A.P. Hill, a designated cooperative wildlife management area, provides excellent hunting and fishing opportunities.
The Rappahannock and Mattaponi Rivers are used
extensively for boating and fishing. The Rappahanock River follows
Caroline's easter border,providing opportunities for boating, fishing,
wildlife watching and water sports. Visitors can rent a canoe, kayak
or jon boat in Port Royal. AREA LIBRARIES: AREA ATTRACTIONS/EVENTS POLICE/EMERGENCY SERVICES The county is served by a Sheriff's Department with 32 full-time sworn-in personnel. There are 17 state police officers assigned to the county. The Town of Bowling Green supports its own police department and maintains an excellent working relationship with the County Sheriff's Office and State Police. A full-time professional heads the county's Fire and Rescue operations and coordinates 6 Fire Departments and 3 Rescue Squads with approximately 300+ volunteers.
