The Caroline County Cannery is provided by the Caroline County Board of Supervisors and is under the supervision of the Department of Public Works.

  1. Where is the Caroline County Cannery located? The Cannery is located on South Route 301, adjacent to the Caroline County Community Services Center. After passing the Community Services Center on Route 301, enter the Cannery parking area using Cannery Road.

  3. Who can use the Cannery? The cannery is available to all residents of Caroline County and the surrounding areas.

  5. What are the Cannery hours? The cannery is open on Tuesdays and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The cannery begins operation on July 1 through December 30th.

  7. Does this Cannery use aluminum cans? Yes. The Caroline Cannery uses only aluminum cans. No glass jars are allowed.

  9. How do I get the aluminum cans? The aluminum cans are available for purchase at the Cannery.

  11. How much does it cost? Each can cost $.35 cents to process.

  13. What am I expected to do? You will be required to prepare the food, place it in the cans, and operate the equipment for processing. You will also be required to clean the processing area used and all the equipment used for your food items.

  15. Is there someone there to assist me? Yes. The cannery staff is there to answer your questions and to show you how to use the equipment. They will assist you through the entire process but are not available to do your canning or to clean up the process area after you finish. You must remain at the Cannery from start to finish for the entire food processing.

  17. Are there limits to the amount of food I can bring? There are no limits to the amount of food you can bring. The smallest amount recommend for canning is a bushel. If you are canning larger amounts or several varieties, please bring enough help to ensure you finish within a reasonable length of time.

  19. How long will it take me to can? The average length of time is about 4 to 5 hours, but the length of time will depend on the amount and type of food you are canning.

  21. How many quarts will I get from a bushel? For the majority of fruits and vegetables, you will get an average of 18-21 quarts. For some things such as peas, greens, beans, and corn the average is about 8 quarts.

  23. What do I need to bring with me to the Cannery? Bring your cleaned food items, apron, hand towels, paper towels, paring knives, seasonings, etc.

  24. Remember—SAFETY FIRST! No short shorts, halters, or open shoes should be worn at the cannery. No children under 12 years of age are permitted in the processing areas.
