The Caroline High School Symphonic Band recently distinguished itself in the annual Music in the Parks Program at Hershey Park in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
"The band did an awesome job," said Band Director Courtney Woodward. It won First Place in the AA division for schooling numbering over 700 as well as First Place Overall of the six competing bands.
The students paid for their charter bus tickets; the trip was self-funded, she said.
Woodward said she works closely with Caroline Middle School and during the school year her 49-member band practices twice weekly after school for two hours.
Woodward has been band director for four years. She graduated in 2005 with a B.A. from East Carolina University where she played flute. She recently married Patrick Woodward who is band director at Bluefield Middle School.
"It's been a great year and we're happy for the summer," she said.
